Francis Greenleaf Allinson papers, 1899-1929.

Consists of manuscripts, speeches and addresses, lecture texts, notes, translations, and clippings dating from 1899 to 1929 that document the work of philologist Francis Greenleaf Allinson. The collection primarily documents Allinson's lectures on Greek literature and drama and his translation of Menander of Athens. The manuscript copy of Menander: principal fragments and correction notes for a second edition are in the collection. Classical authors discussed in the papers, especially in the lecture texts, include Menander of Athens, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, and Sophocles. Lecture topics include the Acropolis; Greek deities such as Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, and Hermes (Thanatos); mythological figures such as Charon and Pegasus; modern Greece; and Greek anthology.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
